Harvesting Your Health

Lily Leedom, Owner of SalterieOne (located in Duxbury, MA) often is asked if salt is healthy for you? To answer this question, first she answers:

How is sea salt different than “table” salt?

Processed table salt (think little tiny salt beads in a salt shaker) is produced in a factory setting where it is stripped of minerals & nutrients until it is just sodium chloride. More often than not, chemicals are used in the process to dye the salt white and iodine is added along with compounds to prevent clumping. Just like we know processed sugar is not good for us, similarly, processed salt is not a natural product and therefore not the best option. Think high fructose corn syrup (like table salt) compared to honey (like sea salt – all natural).

Table salt is stripped of its minerals and has anti-caking agents, such as sodium aluminum silicate, or additive E-554. There are a total of 18 food additives that are allowed in salt – not good for your health.

Unlike processed salt, our sea salt is made from the pristine waters of Duxbury Bay, MA. Duxbury Bay is a unique landscape with special marine qualities. It is home to 40 million oysters whose main job is to clean the water. There are 10+ foot tides which bring in fresh, pure ocean water that is collected only at peak tide, after the oysters have had their chance to filter it. And, different seasons bring different mineral content which creates flavorful, pure salt.

Our sea salt is slowly harvested through low temperature heat allowing the water to evaporate over time. Once condensed down to a high level of salinity, our salt is spread in to pans where it is allowed to develop in to beautiful flakes. The flavor is delicious and our sea salt is mineral rich – full of healthy essential minerals that bring both flavor to the salt and healthy elements to you.

There are no additives, whiteners or chemicals used in the processing of our salt. Our sea salt is hand harvested in small batches so you can feel good knowing that you are using sea salt free of processing, chemicals, or whitening. Just pure sea water, full of minerals & essential nutrients.

How does salt add to my health?

Sea salt provides dozens of essential minerals & trace minerals including potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium. It helps balance our electrolytes, acts as a anti-microbial to help fight off microbes in our bodies.

Sea salt is actually very hydrating due to the high content of minerals which nourish your cells. It’s also a great staple for any meal – an easy way to bring out the natural flavor of food. Sprinkle SalterieOne sea salt throughout the process of cooking your meal and it’s even great to sprinkle in to water! We call this salt juice.
